May 27, 2025 Tip of the Day: Be careful with AI. I typed the following into Copilot today: "What is the product 198.767 x 45.0854?" It gave the answer 8,963.3225 which is only valid to three significant figures. The correct answer is 8961.4897 so be careful if you use AI to solve engineering (or any math) problems. Significant figures are very important since they carry through to subsequent calculations within an engineering solution. All of the calculations on our website use double-precision (16 significant figures). We do not use any AI. Please be careful and check results if you use AI for numerical work.
